Syed Ahmed is a technologist who finds himself at an interesting point in time, one where technology is now clearly a utility, but also remains a key source of differentiation for organisations who figure out how to leverage it appropriately.
Professionally, this is exactly what I do.
I help companies apply management discipline to their technology functions by combining deep expertise in technology, business and problem solving.
While still firmly a geek at heart, I also (strangely) enjoy both people and change management, which if you think about it, are the foundation to successfully guiding technology use in and by organisations. What qualifies me for this?
Well, I have a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Information Systems and a Master of Information Systems (Honours) with research in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Wollongong, as well as an MBA (Executive) from the AGSM at the University of New South Wales. Between those three degrees, that’s a lot of detailed, immersive study of both technology and management. I also have lots of professional experience …
My early career concentrated on effective software development. Building on my academic research capability and strong technical skills, I progressed upstream in the software delivery chain from system maintenance, enhancement and greenfield development to complex large scale integration. Recognizing that the need to exert greater influence on project outcomes requires shaping them earlier in their lifecycle, I leveraged my consulting experience and technology skills to transition into solution architecture.
An increased understanding of the business context of technology guided me into enterprise architecture, where I focussed on using IT Strategy to lead business and technology alignment. Moving into senior management has allowed me to refine my business, leadership and people management skills to envisage, communicate and execute cultural and transformational change, while also finessing and gaining insights into the operational, commercial and vendor management aspects of technology groups.
Besides my day job, I also provide independent advisory services around business and technology strategy, application portfolio optimisation and management, and software development.
Organisations I have worked with in the past include ThoughtWorks, Servcorp, Perpetual, Avanade, Telstra, Optus and the NSW Government. More details are on my LinkedIn profile.
